Get To Know Gorgeous Greve In Chianti

There are few people who wouldn’t put Italy at the top of their holiday wish list. This wonderful country is renowned for its depth of culture, history, art and, of course, who could forget that iconic cuisine? One of the most visited regions is that of beautiful Tuscany, a place that’s filled to the brim with all those attributes mentioned, and much more besides.

Any visitor to Tuscany will undoubtedly be looking for the best things to do in Chianti, and one popular recommendation is the charming and culturally important town of Greve. Here are three top attractions to keep an eye out for on your visit.

The Town Square

One of the first things you’ll notice is that the town’s main square is not, in fact, a square at all. Its unusual triangular shape sets it apart from other towns, as does the portico that runs along its three sides, framing the entrance to an array of shops and cafes. As well as simply wandering around and browsing the shops, you can admire the statue of the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano (whose claim to fame is discovering New York’s Hudson Bay), Santa Croce church and the beautiful neo-Renaissance style Palazzo del Commune.

Museo d’Arte Sacra di San Francesco

Formerly enjoying life as a convent, this well curated gallery is not big and brashy like its Florentine counterparts but it is, nonetheless, a very interesting site for those with a thirst for history and art. Its small collection includes paintings, sculptures, furnishings and vestments dating back as far as the fourteenth century, all of which weave together a comprehensive depiction of the town’s vibrant culture. Along with a cross reliquary (a shrine/receptacle for holy relics) from the fourteenth century, one of the most important exhibits is the fifteenth century stucco by Nanni di Bartolo, of the Madonna and Child.

Castello di Verrazzano

This gorgeous hilltop castle dates back to Etruscan times, later becoming a Roman settlement. It enjoys a long and prolific heritage of winemaking, with references to its vineyards mentioned as far back as 1150. In the seventh century it came under the ownership of the Verrazzano family (and was the birthplace of the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano), followed by the Ridolfis and, latterly, the Cappellinis, who are responsible for its complete restoration. Today the magnificent 225-hectare wine estate hosts tours of the cellars and gardens and the views over the surrounding countryside are nothing short of breathtaking.

Visit Greve, One of the Best Things to do in Chianti

These three attractions are just the beginning of discovering the charming ambience and culture of this lovely town and commune. While the majority of people know this area for its wine production, there is a lot more to fall in love with – although it should be noted that the food and wine are unbelievably good!

When it comes to planning things to do in Chianti, you really are going to be spoiled for choice, but visiting Greve is one thing that really shouldn’t be missed. Booking an organised tour with a reputable operator will not only provide an itinerary packed with some of the best things to do in Chianti, but you’ll also have the benefit of a knowledgeable guide.
